Seabrook Island
Thirty minutes south of historic Charleston lies Seabrook Island, a 2200 acre private vacation resort property. Seabrook is unique among Charleston’s islands in that it is totally private and completely owned by its residents. Island access is controlled by a security gate manned 24 hours a day to ensure privacy for residents and their guests.
The indigenous people of this land were fisherman who made their catch in the Atlantic Ocean and the Edisto River. The English settlers then came and found the land good for growing rice and indigo. Following the Civil War, William Seabrook purchased the island, which still carries his name. In the 1980’s development began at Seabrook all the while preserving the natural environment. Even today there are more than a thousand permanent residents at Seabrook, but only a fraction of the land has been developed. There are no high-rise condominiums or hotels and no franchise restaurants. The three and one half miles of beach, the maritime forest, marshes and lakes remain the focal point of the island.
Many retirees call Seabrook home with the average age being 61. This private setting offers a country club with 15 tennis courts and facilities for horseback riding, fishing and sailing. There are several fresh water pools scattered about the island and two nationally acclaimed golf courses.
